From Mt. Etna to Mt. Hollywood
Frank Cornelissen's wines hit L.A.
A Danish winemaker producing Italian wines in the mountains of Sicily would seem to have little to do with Los Angeles.
But the wines of Frank Cornelissen can now be enjoyed with a view of Mount Hollywood rather than Mount Etna, thanks to L.A.-based Amy Atwood Selections, which is distributing the wines on the West Coast for importer Zev Rovine.
Cornelissen has developed an increasingly cultish following since he ditched the wine-broker business to make his own wines in 2001. Fermented in amphorae, large terra-cotta vessels buried in crushed volcanic rock, his wines never have anything added to them. Ever.
This leads to a white and a red, both called MunJebel, which are as astounding and challenging as a well-written novel.
MunJebel Bianco 7 ($44 for 750 ml) comprises predominantly Grecanico blended with Coda di Volpe, Catarratto and Carricante. It's a cloudy, ruddy gold in the glass, the result of extended skin contact. This incredibly fresh, tannic orange wine is evocative of cider funk and peach fuzz, gravel and smoke.
As Buzz's wine buyer, Jamil Williams, said about the MunJebels and also the long-finishing Rosso del Contadino 8 ($29 for 750 ml), "These wines will change you; I don't want to drink anything else."
Frank Cornelissen's wines are available at Buzz, Palate Wine Merchant, Domaine LA and Wine House.
