Sweets aside, we love a sweet story.

Case in point: the authors of the new Kitchen & Co. cookbook ($23). Brits–and friends and former roommates–Ellie Grace and Rosie French started a blog together that blossomed into a supper club, and then a restaurant, French & Grace, in Brixton Village, south of London.

And now, with their first cookbook, they've shared heartwarming, unfussy dishes meant for small kitchens. Arranged by season, the beautifully photographed recipes have evocative headings, such as "Our first spring supper next to open windows" and "A hearty brunch for another working weekend," that make them all the more endearing. The book's thick, weighty stock is ideal for sauce-splattered kitchen explorations.

We made the duo's chocolate, orange and beet brownies (see the recipe). The addition of roasted, puréed beets adds a touch of earthiness to the fudgy confections, which we enjoyed more and more with each bite.

It looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
