Summer People

Where the Obamas (and you) should eat on Martha's Vineyard

When the First Family arrives in Martha's Vineyard for their summer vacation, this millionaire's playground will be ready with plenty of stunts to lure the first family to its businesses, including the Offshore Ale Company's new brew, Ale To the Chief, and Sharky's Cantina's potent Obamaritas.

But where will the Obamas eat? A better question is: Where should they eat? We offer our island favorites for them--and for you.

Art Cliff Diner's Food Truck For years, this retro diner has lured in locals and tourists for hearty, home-style breakfast and lunch. Now owner Gina Stanley is serving dinner from a vintage truck out front. She's got burgers, including an unforgettable lamb burger (mixed with onions and feta), and hot dogs like the "bikini weenie," topped with avocado-tomato salsa. And don't skip dessert: Stanley previously worked as a pastry chef at Blair House, where presidential guests stay when they're in Washington. 39 Beach Rd., Vineyard Haven; 508-693-1224

The Sweet Life Café It's odd that one of the island's best restaurants lacks an ocean view. But you won't miss it: This handsome Victorian house has a charming garden strung with white lights. And it'll be hard to look up from plates of white gazpacho with clams, wild-mushroom strudel or the lavender crème brûlée. Can't get a reservation? Head across the street to Slice of Life, the owners' casual café. 63 Circuit Ave., Oak Bluffs; 508-696-0200 or sweetlifemv.com

Larsen's Fish Market The Obamas are staying on the island's less-crowded west end, but there's no avoiding the hordes at Larsen's. This retail fish counter sells shucked oysters and cherrystone clams, seafood chowder and an old-school lobster roll that would please even a proud Down-Easter. As evening falls, assemble a picnic, sit on the dock and watch the sun set over the water. Dutcher's Dock, Menemsha; 508-645-2680
