School's Out

Delicious condiments and dressings for a good cause

Everyone loves the thrill of a secret recipe. So when a friend bequeathed Patsy Smith the confidential formula for homemade mustard--and told her to use it only when philanthropy called--Smith created an entire company based on this philosophy.

All the profits from her line of SchoolHouse Kitchen products benefit educational causes (click here for a list). Until recently, the New York-based company has relied solely on the balanced bloom of its SweetSmoothHot mustard, the spicy fruit of Bardshar Chutney (another recipe bequest) and Patsy's own classic Balsamic Vinaigrette.

But SchoolHouse has another secret: Alongside its sleek new online marketplace, it has just unveiled three new jars of do-good delicacies. Wendy Wheeler Smith, Patsy's daughter and SchoolHouse's president, recommends the ideal summertime pairing for each of their new family heirlooms:

Squadrilla Chutney ($6.50 for 9 ounces) Spread this chile-tinged mixture, reminiscent of orange marmalade, on grilled pork or tuna.

Horseradish-Dill Mustard ($5.50 for 9 ounces) This nose-clearing condiment is well-mated with salmon or bratwurst.

Ginger Lime Dressing ($7 for 12 ounces) Drizzle a bit on salads or grilled white-fleshed fish marinated in soy and ginger.
