Beyond the Box

Grateful Red weans customers off the bottle

Clif's Climber

Arlington’s Screwtop Wine Bar has an outdoorsy little sister.

The new Grateful Red wineshop in Clarendon features wine from small-scale producers, with owner Wendy Buckley planning to round out her selection at 250 wines by fall.

Buckley looks for eco- and activity-friendly wines not sold in glass bottles. Here are a few of her favorites:

Volère ($23 for 1,500 ml): Italy’s Cantina di Soave sells three varietals in boxes meant to be carried like purses. The container works like a canteen: To pour it, grab the handle and turn the side spout.

Clif Climber ($19 for 1,500 ml): It makes sense that the company behind Clif Bars would create a hike-ready wine. The Clif Family Winery fills soft 1½-liter pouches with two varietals of its California wines: apple-rich unoaked Chardonnay, and jammy, light Cabernet Sauvignon.

Flasq ($6 for 375 ml): This California company lightens its half-bottles by building them with sturdy aluminum. Try peppery Merlot, or Chardonnay that is bright with tropical pineapple notes. Each bottle holds two full glasses, with a mouth wide enough for easy sipping, should you choose not to share.
