Try a weekend without cheesesteaks
Federal Donuts | Ben Franklin | Russet
Our forefathers were on to something when they settled in Philadelphia.
Though it may be best known for cheesesteaks and pretzels, the city of brotherly love is cooking up so much more. (Click here to see the full itinerary--with photos!)
Stop by Reading Terminal Market for towering pork sandwiches and first dibs on early-season strawberries and asparagus. Or, if you’d rather have the best spring ingredients prepared for you, bring your own bottle of wine to tiny newcomer Russet, and prepare for a bounty of just-sprouted vegetables in light French and Italian preparations.
Across town in Old City, the city’s retro-minded Berley brothers--who’ve made old-fashioned ice cream cool again at Franklin Fountain--have brought their Wonka touch to a turn-of-the-century candy shop. Not to be out-sweetened, Federal Donuts goes beyond sugar, rolling freshly fried donuts in Indian cinnamon and lavender-scented vanilla.
It’ll be a weekend of dining independence.
