2011 brought plenty of excellent eating
It was a great year to have an appetite in Washington. Here are a few memorable highlights:
Hot Buns: California's greasy spoons have nothing on our burger scene. Standard started the movement with its pickle-topped patties. Soon after, Shake Shack, Burger Tap & Shake and Boundary Stone hit the scene.
Soup Star: Soup stepped away from appetizer status this year. Ramen joint Toki Underground had crowds snaking down its steep stairwell from its earliest days. Ris, Soupergirl and the newly reopened Ren's Ramen have also become destinations for their nuanced broths.
Next to Napa: Virginia's wine country came charging into the spotlight this year with forceful but food-friendly blends. Acclaimed newcomer RdV may have the most potential for international stardom, but even homegrown operations like 29 Vines are ready for the cellar.
Penn Name: The palatable perimeter of Penn Quarter continues to expand. Fabio Trabocchi is back, luring diners to Indiana Avenue for ginger-spiced lobster ravioli at Fiola. Behind the Verizon Center, thriving newcomer Graffiato and stalwart The Source prove there's reason to forge east.
Fit to Be Thai: Superstar Johnny Monis surprised even his most devoted fans with his chile-laced Little Serow. Chipotle also took on a Thai accent with fiery curries at sister restaurant ShopHouse. And the city's original Thai superstar, Taw Vigsittaboot, moved on up with his Thai X-ing.
