Fresh Take
Yola takes the freeze out of frozen yogurt
Frozen yogurt finally hit our area in a big way last year, with a huge influx of new shops.
But Yola bucks the trend with a fresher concept. The Dupont Circle newcomer specializes in traditional--rather than frozen--yogurt products, all made with local dairy.
Co-owner Laura Smith works with Blue Ridge Dairy and Trickling Springs Creamery to source flavors like maple, honey and lemon, as well as thick, tart Greek yogurt.
The shop offers local jams and butters from Bigg Riggs to flavor its parfaits ($4.10 for signatures; $4.25 for custom). Instead of standard granola and berries, opt for swirls of spicy, cinnamon-laden pumpkin butter in maple yogurt with dried cherries and walnuts, or Greek yogurt with dried dates, mint and a hint of agave nectar. Plain yogurt with dill, almonds and cucumber has the freshness of a Mediterranean mezze.
The best smoothies ($4.50) are green, made with surprising ingredients like avocado, kale and broccoli. The bright lavender-hued, blueberry-beet smoothie sneaks a healthy dose of beets and bok choy in with its berries and almond milk. As supplements ($1), try shots of kefir and green tea, additional probiotics, or wheatgrass.
There's also room for vices. Yola has an excellent direct-trade coffee program based around Counter Culture beans and house-made syrups.
