Bigg Riggs keeps its best produce all year long

Peaches and tomatoes are on their way out of season, but Bigg Riggs Farm has a way to keep its farm-grown produce in your pantry all year long, with stellar jarred products.

After bemoaning the fleeting seasons of his favorite produce, former marine Cal Riggleman devised a line of farm-fresh canned products to preserve the flavors and bring new life to the farm.

When he returned to the West Virginia farm from deployment in Iraq, he set out to create sauces, jellies and pickles from his most flavorful fruits and vegetables.

The farm's famous yellow peaches go into a nectar-like daiquiri mix ($9) for cocktails or sodas, while the vine-ripened flavor of the Bloody Mary mix ($9) puts commercial tomato juices to shame.

Riggleman's tomatillos make for a mild, almost citrusy salsa ($6), and his ketchup ($6) is spiked with pungent wasabi.

Early-season spring onions flavor the wing sauce ($6), which should be a pantry staple for game-day snacking.

Bigg Riggs Farm's products are available online; at Maple Avenue Market, 128 Maple Ave. E, Vienna, 703-957-9348 or mapleavenuemarket.com; and at the Crystal City Farmers' Market on Tuesdays, 3 to 7 p.m., Crystal Dr. (at 18th St.), Arlington, freshfarmmarket.org
