Shore Lunch
Before spending the day in shore traffic, stop at these cafes
A trip to the shore means sandy beaches and cool ocean breezes, but only after brutal traffic jams past less-than-appetizing rest stops.
If you find yourself stuck and starving, here are a few suggestions for satisfying snacks along the way:
Rhode Island Reds This tiny Hyattsville café and market (pictured) has the charm of a small-town corner store. Thin-crust, Roman-style pizzas ($10) are made to order, and sandwiches are stuffed with house-roasted meats. The shelves of sundries mean that you can stock up on Italian sodas, dried beans and chocolates to use at the beach house.
Miller Farms Get an early start before a pit stop at this farm and bakery in Clinton, where farm-grown ingredients are baked and fried into apple cider doughnuts, fritters and pies (peach doughnuts and pies are specials now). Miller picked up the recipes from longtime favorite Cherry Hill Farm, so it's also fast become a destination for some of the best baked goods in the region.
Caffé Pronto If you head out on a Friday, stop by this shop's Annapolis roastery for tastings of single-origin espresso, and free weekly cupping classes on different coffee notes. Owner Vincent Iatesta travels the world to secure direct-trade beans, so choices change regularly (try the micro-lot Burundi and single-estate Papua New Guinea roasts now).
