Hail Marys
The Source offers an off-the-Mall alternative
After battling the tourists along the National Mall, you deserve a drink.
The Source by Wolfgang Puck has come to the rescue with a new Saturday brunch--and excellent Bloody Mary menu.
The food menu combines the restaurant's classics--a towering Maine lobster club sandwich ($24) and mustardy Chinese chicken salad ($14)--and new items, like a three-egg omelet with local Cheddar and bacon confit ($15), and thick slices of French toast ($15) served with seasonal berries.
But the brunch Bloody Marys (all $8)--served in large hurricane glasses--are the biggest lure.
With Chinese five-spice powder, Szechuan chile paste and a garnish of pickled chiles, the Shanghai Mary has enough spices to complement each dumpling and shu mai from the expansive dim sum platter.
The Chesapeake Mary--seasoned with plenty of Old Bay--pays tribute to the Mid-Atlantic with a piece of bay crab.
And the classic District Mary (pictured) takes the cocktail to a whole new local level. The recipe is a classic mix of vodka with tomato and lime juices, but chef Scott Drewno completes the flavor by making miniature half-smoke sausages to garnish each glass. It makes a weenie out of lesser garnishes.
