Street Cred

International flavors take to the streets

Call it ironic, but despite the recent influx of street carts and food trucks, actual street food can be hard to find. (No, cupcakes and hot dogs don't count.)

But Sâuçá and its ambitious menu of international sandwiches aim to fill that void.

This new food truck makes its curbside debut at lunch today (around 18th and I streets NW, weather permitting) with a bazaar of popular flavors from around the world, all adapted into fillings for grilled flatbread sandwiches.

Sâuçá's signature Mumbai butter chicken (a version of chicken makhani) excels in the format. The flatbread has a consistency similar to Indian naan bread, making the slightly spicy and nutty stewed chicken a portable, all-in-one curry lunch ($7.50). Other options include a ginger-packed fish banh mi ($7.50) and plump merguez sausage wrapped into flatbread with frites ($7.50).

Once you get your sandwich, hit the built-in self-serve condiment tray with 22 sauces--charred tomato salsa and creamy Thai coconut are standouts--to enhance the meal. Sauces and menu items are color-coded by region to ease confusion and aid pairings.

Toffles (pictured, $4.50)--topping-endowed Belgian waffles--add the sweet element. Browned to a caramel finish outside, with a soft, doughy center, they can be served with a layer of cream cheese frosting, heaps of peanut butter and jelly, or a simple sprinkling of powdered sugar.

The truck itself boasts a full kitchen, so food is cooked--rather than just warmed--onboard. And a sound system complete with microphones could lead to impromptu karaoke.

Either way, you'll be dancing in the streets.
