Small Pie, Big Ambitions
Expect great things from Bang Bang Pie & Coffee
Dave and Megan Miller roast coffee and make pies, peddling their goods from a brightly painted truck called Bang Bang.
To circumvent various city regulations, they give Megan's pies away (for a suggested $3 donation) and premix Dave's freshly roasted coffee ($2 per cup or $13 per pound of beans) into blends like Thai iced coffee, scented with vanilla and cinnamon.
Dave rents the roaster at Star Lounge, which carries Megan's pie as well. There, he crafts a single, versatile roast that he describes as "a quintessential chocolaty coffee."
But the pair's ambitions are even grander. The duo has found a brick-and-mortar spot, where they plan to offer a full line of pies plus house-roasted pairings--the peachy notes of an unwashed African coffee with a peach pie, for example.
Megan bakes two flavors daily. On a recent visit, there was classic lemon meringue and a lushly fruity strawberry pie, for which she bakes fresh strawberries with strawberry compote and tops the pie with whipped cream. Shaker lemon pie is one of her specialties; Butterscotch Cloud Pie is next on our list to try.
But before the stationary pie shop comes the mêlée: The two aim to break the Guinness record for largest pie fight during a sticky, 1,000-person gathering this fall.
