Scribe wines debut in Chicago

New wines come into Chicago on a near-daily basis.

But here's a name to be particularly excited about: Scribe Winery, a young, ambitious Sonoma upstart that has been making waves in wine circles, but never in Illinois--until now.

Made on land that was home to winemaking pioneers in the late 1800s before falling into post-Prohibition disuse, Scribe's wines are known for a blend of history, sustainable agricultural practices and small-batch production (2,000 cases per year).

Local sommeliers have jumped at the debut. As the wines arrive this week, find them at The Elysian, Blue 13, Macku and Eno, whose wine director, Scott Harney, ordered Scribe's entire line. Come mid-September, taste four of the winery's five varieties at Naha.

First, though, head to Eno or Macku, the Lincoln Park Japanese restaurant, to try a limited-edition jewel: skin-fermented, hand-pressed Chardonnay. Scribe produced only 38 cases of the subtle wine, which evokes its finest old-world counterparts and is a superb pairing for both charcuterie and buttery hamachi nigiri.

Nearly 80 percent of the winery's output goes to its mailing list, Viticultural Society, which is also now open to Illinois residents. Sign up to taste the winery's extra-limited releases, like the Sylvaner that hit San Francisco this past spring.
