Lunch Bunch
Spend the afternoon at Longman & Eagle and Kith & Kin
Just in time for summer Fridays, two nighttime favorites have opened their doors during the day. Spend an afternoon exploring the new lunch menus--and day-friendly cocktail lists.
Longman & Eagle, Logan Square's buzzing gastropub, recently added weekday lunch, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A patio shaded by umbrellas and trees offers 30 prime afternoon seats. The menu is short and sweet: Make a meal of creamy Nichols Farm asparagus soup with a slow-cooked egg and garlic toast ($8) and a pot of duck rillettes ($8), or try a piled-high BLT made with Swan Creek pork belly and tomato jam. Take your digestif in the form of the Carpathian, an afternoon-friendly cocktail made with Fernet Branca, Aperol and birch beer ($8). 2657 N. Kedzie Ave.; 773-276-7110 or longmanandeagle.com
At Kith & Kin, seek out favorites from the dinner menu, including crocks of buttery chicken liver paté and rich pimento cheese spread (both $5); buttermilk-fried chicken thighs with morel mushroom-potato salad ($15); or beer-battered grouper cheeks ($14). Now they're all available during the day, Wednesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hefty salads--like the massive Cobb with all the fixings ($9)--and a "ploughman's lunch" of Sweet Grass Dairy cheeses and paté are excellent excuses to spend an afternoon by the restaurant's open front windows. 1119 W. Webster Ave.; 773-472-7070 or kithandkinchicago.com
