Every neighborhood needs a place to pick up a fresh baguette, flaky croissant and shot of espresso. But only Atwater Village's Village Bakery & Café has all of that--plus the doughnut muffin.
Rolled in sugar and cinnamon, the pastry ($2.25; pictured) tastes like an old-fashioned cake doughnut, but the batter is baked in muffin tins, not fried. You'll probably convince yourself that it's healthier than a real doughnut--and leave with two more than you went in for.
It's just one creation of baker and owner Barbara Monderine, who turned Atwater's teensy L.A. Bread bakery into the genial Village Bakery & Café late last year.
The space has since expanded--it's now twice its former size, with communal tables and a pet-friendly patio out front.
The menu has also grown. In addition to the doughnut muffin, there are more than 15 different breads (including a delicious baguette), wonderfully golden croissants ($2.50), buttery shortbread topped with caramel-soaked nuts ($2.50), and heavenly bacon-maple scones ($3).
You'll also find breakfast dishes like the Atwater Special, a potato-leek pancake smothered in fluffy scrambled eggs, spinach and slices of tomato ($9.50), and a slew of sandwiches and fresh salads available throughout the day.
After all, you can't live on doughnut muffins alone.
