Could This App Be The Key To Stopping Food Waste?

Users can now buy restaurant leftovers on the cheap

A third of the world's food supply goes to waste every year. In Europe alone, the amount of food wasted could feed 200 million people. Too Good to Go wants to stop that. The app, which launched in Denmark and is now operating in France, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Germany and in a handful of UK cities including more recently London, allows users to buy leftovers directly from a restaurant.

The food from the 170+ restaurants and cafés is priced between $1.29 and $4.90, CNBC shares. "We're trying to highlight that food waste is not actually waste at all . . . and place a value on food as something that should be eaten and not thrown away," cofounder Chris Wilson explains. Restaurants in the UK "are throwing out over 600,000 tons of edible food each year, that's something we're trying to raise awareness of." So far, the organization estimates that it has saved 3,070 meals.

Though, people wanting to buy this food may need to stay up late. In order to not cut into food that the restaurant will sell to typical patrons, the leftover food is for sale only for the hour before the restaurant closes.
