Housewares And Kitchen Shops - West Elm Market, Terrain, Haymarket

Why we're happy to get lost in West Elm Market, Terrain, Les Touillers and more

There are certain housewares shops that ignite that visceral reaction of: "We want all of the things."

Their appeal speaks to the power of curation: Browsing these shops, we find ourselves mentally lining our shelves and restocking our larders. They give us the feeling that just by being there, we're somehow making our homes, and our lives, a little bit more perfect.

Step inside one and you may never want to leave.

Fitzsu
Los Angeles, CA

If your aesthetic is more MoMa than Etsy, stock your drawers with Fitzsu's practical flatware and silverware. Choose from colorful Uzbek-inspired plates from Tsé et Tsé and smooth Eno Piccolo beechwood snack bowls at the Venice store, whose lofty manifesto is: "We don't want to sell everything, only the things we believe in."

Haymaker

Chicago, IL

Wood takes the form of broad cutting boards, serving trays, cookbook holders and striking bowls of all shapes and sizes–many of which are made from reclaimed pieces–at this Anderson design shop. This cream-colored pantry paradise is as much a must-stop on any food lover's tour of Montreal as Joe Beef or Au Pied de Cochon. Maplewood spatulas from Quebec native Tom Littledeer come in an astonishing range of sizes, all available in left- and right-handed versions.

March

San Francisco, CA

As tiny as March is, you could spend an afternoon in calm reverie, pondering the eclectic mix of the pristine and the earthy curated by owner Sam Hamilton, including vintage baskets, sinuous wooden spoons, sturdy classic Aga stoves (she's an authorized dealer) and Brickett Davda tableware.

Shed

Healdsburg, CA

This 9,700-square-foot restaurant, café and market is stocked by founder Cindy Daniel with "things that are functional as well as beautiful, and have stories to them." That means salvaged-wood cutting boards, platters made by Northern California artisans and wooden tortilla presses carved by local students. Don't leave without M.H. Bread & Butter's levain.

Merchandise stretches from classic Jadeite glass from Ohio's Mosser Glass to the world's most beautiful marshmallow roaster. Another brick-and-mortar location in Philadelphia adds to the fantasy.

Thousand Pound Egg

Fort Lauderdale, FL

Karen Gavrilov packs every square inch of her compact Fort Lauderdale shop with artfully displayed food and home goods, such as Rancho Gordo beans, locally made PopNature popsicles and kitschy cantaloupe-shaped bowls. Ask Gavrilov to show you her stash of vintage cookbooks.

Tortoise General Store

Los Angeles, CA

The elegant earthenware pots and cast-iron kitchenware at this Venice design store are built to last. Owners Keiko and Taku Shinimoto will happily act as cultural ambassadors for your kitchen, curating a fascinating array of boutique Japanese home goods.

West Elm Market Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY

This is not the West Elm you know. This concept store in Dumbo gathers together a range of well-curated housewares, much of it locally sourced and industrially inspired: Brooklyn Copper Cookware, Schimdt Brother's Cutlery and an exclusive collection with British cookware expert Sebastian Conran. Pastries from Roberta's sweeten the experience.
