Second Act
The 411 on 903
We can thank Sandbox Bakery--and owner Mutsumi Takehara--for many things: miso-filled buns, hot dogs wrapped in brioche, saving Bernal Heights from its food-desert status.
We can thank 903, Sandbox's new sibling, for a host of new cravings.
At 903, you have three opportunities a day to get hooked: at breakfast, on Liége-style waffles with maple syrup ($6); at lunch, on juicy fried shrimp balls lined up in a challah hot dog bun, lavished with garlic aioli ($8.50); at dinner, on rotisserie chicken spread with a Thai-style rub ($14).
Longtime customers will be happy that some Sandbox favorites have made their way over to 903, including rice burgers, where the bun is replaced with rice patties and the filling is either Japanese-style fried chicken ($8) or baked tofu ($7.50).
The food may be pan-Asian, but at its heart, 903 is a neighborhood joint. When the liquor license was approved, there were some high fives in the snug dining room. Soon, a parklet will occupy the parking spaces out front, and on any day of the week Takehara, her husband or one of their three young sons might greet you at the door.
You can give thanks for all of that, too.
